Why Chemical Peels?

Should I get a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels may sound scary but when done by a professional skin specialist they can have great results in tackling different ailments on your skin.

Who is an ideal candidate for a chemical peel?

Anyone who wants to rid their skin of skin texture or unevenness. Chemical peels are generally a treatment which works more effectively on lighter skin tones, extra care is taken for those with darker complexions as the risks of uneven skin tones is increased in this case.

Are there risks?

All treatments carry some risk. Because they penetrate more deeply into the skin, a medium peel for instance carries a higher risk of infection than a light peel; however, they are still considered quite safe. The severity of side effects depends on the strength and length of the peel. They include redness, swelling, crusting, itching and peeling. These side effects should resolve after about two weeks. Occasionally, medium peels can cause redness lasting several months. In some instances, they may lighten the skin by exfoliating dark spots, but it is also possible for a peel to darken skin by triggering post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation.

What Happens after a chemical peel?

After a chemical peel treatment you may experience some side effects. These can vary in duration and can be dependent on the person. Initially for a few hours you may feel a tingly, mild burning sensation and or redness. In the days following there may be some dryness, irritation and mild swelling, your skin may start to peel and have a temporary darker complexion. After about a week to 2 weeks you should start to see the formation of new healthy looking skin! During this period you may still have some redness and a temporary darker or lighter complexion that should start to go away in about a month.

Before or After Care

Before Care

Before any chemical peel it is important that you stop any direct sun exposure for at least 2 weeks before your appointment.

Please do not have any waxing, laser skin or other skin treatments for 14 days prior to your appointment.

Acids, Exfoliators, Vitamin A or Retinol based products should be ceased for at least a week prior to your appointment.

If you have hyperpigmentation or medium-darker skin tones in particular you may choose to contact us to see if there are any other before treatment recommendations for you.

After Care

After any Chemical it is important for you to use a gentle and hydrating skin care routine. For at least a week after treatment its recommended that you continue to cease any Acids, Retinol or Vitamin A based products to allow your peel to work correctly.

Follow our post care guide and avoid any direct sun exposure for at least a week after your treatment. Apply sunscreen as per your normal routine, this should be at least SPF 30+ (ideally 50+).
